Prepare Your Preschooler for our Learn To Swim Lessons!

September 24, 2025

Moving from Preschool Lessons to Learn to Swim (LTS)

Moving from Preschool lessons into our Learn to Swim (LTS) program is an exciting milestone for your child, it’s the next big step in their swimming journey. While this is something to celebrate, we also understand it can bring new routines, faces, and expectations. Our goal is to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible.

What’s Different in our School-Aged Learn to Swim program?

In the Learn to Swim program, children begin developing the core swimming strokes of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke, alongside vital water safety skills. There is also a stronger focus on independent swimming, with our instructors encouraging children to swim with less assistance.

Lessons may also take place in deeper water, with children of different ages learning together. Key differences include:

  • Longer stretches of swimming practice.
  • Stroke technique drills and skill-building games.
  • Activities to build confidence in deeper water.

How BlueFit Swimming Supports Your Child

We know that change can sometimes feel a little daunting. That’s why our team focuses on:

  • Being patient
  • Clearly explaining the changes
  • Celebrating every small win

How You Can Help at Home

Parents play a big part in ensuring a smooth transition. You can support your child by:

  • Talking about LTS as a “big kid” achievement to build excitement
  • Practising independence, putting on goggles, carrying a towel, or walking to the pool
  • Keeping regular swim day routines so the new class feels familiar
  • Offering positive feedback after each lesson, focusing on effort and improvement

The First Few Weeks

It’s completely normal for your child to feel a little unsure at first. Arriving a bit early, giving them time to watch their class, and stepping back to let the instructor lead can make a big difference. With your encouragement and our caring team, they’ll soon be swimming with confidence and pride.

We will be offering positions in the Learn to Swim program for preschoolers to move into afternoon lessons before November. This gives your child the chance to adjust to afternoon swimming before their routine changes at primary school. By making this shift early, swimming will already be a familiar and enjoyable weekly activity once school begins.
