Not Seeing the Progress You Hoped For in Swimming Lessons?

Has your child been in swimming lessons for a while but you’re not seeing the progress you expected?
While some factors are out of your control, there are plenty of simple ways to help your child feel more confident and start moving forward in their swimming journey.

Why They Might Not Be Progressing

There are a few common reasons why progress can slow down:

  • Fear of failure or too much pressure. Kids can feel anxious when they sense high expectations, which can make them hesitant to try new things.
  • Lack of engagement. Sometimes, children can fall into a routine where they’re not as focused or motivated during lessons.

What You Can Do to Help

  1. Arrive early and stay calm.
Give yourself and your child plenty of time before lessons. A rushed or stressful start can set the wrong tone, and they may start to associate swimming with pressure instead of fun.
  2. Stay committed.
Consistency is key. Regular attendance allows your child to build and retain their skills. When lessons are frequently interrupted, progress can stall, leading to frustration or a sense that it’s “too hard”.
  3. Encourage them with positivity.
It’s natural to feel frustrated if your child’s progress plateaus or if others seem to move ahead faster. But remember, every child develops at their own pace. Your encouragement means a lot; they want to do well, they love your praise, and they notice when you’re watching.
Celebrate every small achievement, those little wins are the building blocks of future strokes.
  4. Let them play!
Outside of swimming lessons, the best thing you can do is simply enjoy the water together. Don’t worry about technique - just make it fun. Encourage splashing, games, and laughter. The more they associate water with joy, the more confident they’ll become.
